Obituary of Katherine Dee Ann Skretting

Katherine Dee Ann Wall Skretting

(October 15, 1954 - March 14, 2024)

Katherine Dee Ann Wall Skretting of Camrose, Alberta, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at the age of 69 years.

Katherine Dee Ann Skretting was born on October 15, 1954, in Livingston MT to Waldo H Wall and Wilma D Wall (nee Sloan). Katherine’s childhood was marked by the experience of living in several communities in the USA. She enjoyed singing and playing instruments in the school band and at Church.

As a young adult, she moved to Camrose, Alberta and attended Camrose Lutheran College. Music continued to be a source of joy for Katherine as a member of the college choir, Sound Foundations, and various other ensembles.

At Camrose Lutheran College, she met a dashing young man, Donald (Don) Lawrence Skretting. Don and Katherine were married on July 2nd, 1977. In 1979 they had a son, Nathan, and shortly thereafter, a daughter, Kimberly, in 1981.

Katherine continued to pursue her love of music, performing in ensembles with close friends, and with Don as members of the Camrose and District Community Band. She completed her MA in Kodály methodology from the University of Calgary. The Music with Children early childhood education program, which still runs under the banner of the Augustana Campus, became her passion for many years.

In 1999, Katherine followed Don to Grande Prairie, Alberta in search of work in his field of residential construction. Grande Prairie presented a new opportunity for her to share her passion for music with piano and voice students in her home as proprietor of Skretting Music Studio.

Don and Katherine grew together in faith and relationship during their years in Grande Prairie. They participated actively in the musical community and as members of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church.

Don’s sudden death in October 2009 was preceded by a diagnosis of progressive Multiple Sclerosis for Katherine, both of which would significantly impact her life’s path. Soon after Don’s death, Katherine moved back to Camrose, where she was graciously accommodated by her sister-in-law Marilyn Murray and nephew Brad Jacobson (and family) before entering long-term care at the Louise Jensen Care Centre.

While in care, and despite her failing physical abilities, Katherine turned her attention toward her faith, remaining positive, strong, generous, and hopeful despite the challenges of her disease. She enjoyed visits from friends, family, and her grandchildren (who were often enticed with the reward of chocolate bars) in her final years and was surrounded by love and fellowship as she passed on March 14th, 2024.

Left to cherish her memory are her son Nathan (Lucie) Skretting; daughter  Kimberly  Skretting (Travis Rott); grandchildren Jakub, Natalie, Matteo, Elishka, Mackenzie, Kajsa, and  Krist; and siblings Marge Peake, Lorene Judkins, Matthew Wall, and Michael (Christine) Wall.

Katherine was predeceased by her husband Donald; sister Carolyn Jacobson; brother Dwayne Wall; and brother-in-law Jim Peake.
